Martin Ian Kamanda is a radiology and public health professional with extensive experience in diagnostic imaging, radiology management, health systems, research, and professional education. He currently serves as the Radiology Manager at The Nairobi Hospital, where he provides strategic and operational leadership in the delivery of safe, efficient, effective, and patient-centred radiology services.
He is a PhD Candidate in Public Health at the University of Johannesburg School of Public Health, where his doctoral research focuses on the determinants of adoption of cytogenetic biomonitoring for genotoxicity surveillance among radiation workers. His research interests reflect his commitment to strengthening occupational radiation protection and advancing evidence-based approaches to the long-term surveillance of radiation workers.
Martin’s academic and professional interests span diagnostic imaging, health systems management, genotoxicity surveillance, radiomorphology and radiomorphometry, medical law and ethics, public health, radiation protection, and sustainable healthcare. He has authored more than 10 peer-reviewed publications, encompassing case reports, original research, and other scholarly contributions. He also serves as a reviewer for several radiology and medical imaging journals and has presented his work at various scientific and professional conferences.
His professional experience extends beyond clinical and managerial practice. He is a former part-time lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the University of Nairobi, where he contributed to the education and mentorship of future radiography and medical imaging professionals. He has also served as a CT Application Specialist, providing technical and clinical expertise in CT applications, protocols, and imaging optimisation.
Martin is actively engaged in professional and scientific activities and serves on the RASCO Scientific Committee and the PACORI Scientific Committee, contributing to the advancement of scientific discourse, research, and professional development within the imaging community.
In his current leadership role at The Nairobi Hospital, Martin is particularly passionate about the intersection of radiology, sustainability, innovation, and health systems transformation. In response to the growing importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in healthcare, he is championing the transition towards Green Radiology. This includes establishing a life-cycle analysis approach to imaging equipment and departmental operations, identifying opportunities for improved resource efficiency, reducing waste, optimising energy consumption, and implementing measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. His professional vision is centred on advancing radiology through innovation, evidence-based practice, responsible leadership, research, and environmental stewardship, while maintaining the patient at the heart of imaging services.
